I think the drug alcohol rehab business has become obsolete and out of touch with the times. Treatment and rehab should not be very much about going to 12 step meetings. And, unfortunately, all to often, that is what it is, primarily. And just so you know I am not anti AA, let me say, personally, I go to a 12 step meeting every day. I think 12 step meetings are one of the best things in the world. What they are not is treatment. The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, among others, are support groups which helps a recovering alcoholic or drug addict stay clean and or sober. Or, as someone once said, AA is there to keep someone sober, not to get them sober. So before picking the best drug alcohol rehab, consider a program which considers itself, a non 12 step program.

Non 12 step rehab treatment centers are way ahead of the curve. The vast majority of alcohol drug rehabs make the 12 steps of alcoholics anonymous the primary focus of their programs. In today’s crazy world, people in rehab need much more than getting taken to lots of AA meetings and talking about the 12 steps. Research now indicates unless an addict or alcoholic gets cognitive behavioral therapy and proper diagnosis of any and all co-occurring disorders, they are at very high risk of relapse.

Very few people would argue the 12 steps work. However, like anything else, it does not work for everyone. For some addicts and alcoholics have tried the 12 steps one or more times, unsuccessfully. Others simply refuse to conform to the idea of admitting powerless and incorporating God into their recovery. For these people, non 12 step programs offer a viable alternative. Non 12 step treatment centers and aftercare groups, such as SMART recovery, fill a very important need for people who want another way to stay clean and sober.
