Most people think that by simply stopping drinking is no big deal. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is a lot more to alcohol detox than most people realize. The truth is it can, in some cases, kill you. That’s right. If a person goes into a state known as Delirium Tremens, better known as the DT’s, there is a 33% likelihood it will be fatal. No one wants to go into an alcohol detox rehab. And certainly not for something as seemingly trivial as quitting drinking. Think it if this way, it’s not worth dying for either.

For many, they just do not have the right insurance or enough money to be admitted into a nice, private 30 day drug rehab program. For them, they need to call their state public program office. The federal government set up a nifty 800 number which gets them where they need to go. There is also this website, which will help people get the information they need. Almost 60 years ago, a doctor by the name of Silkworth made an amazing discovery. In a word, he found out that unless or until all the alcohol was completely out of a drinker’s body, it would  be very difficult for a heavy drinker to quit drinking. As long as there is alcohol in the body, the body is going through withdrawal, which causes craving for more alcohol. The process of alcohol detox needs to be done under medical supervision, not only because it will much more comfortable, it can be fatal, that’s right. A detoxing person can go into a severe reaction to withdrawal, known as the DT’s. And once that happens, there is a 33% chance they will die. So, the bottom line is, would you rather go into a detox facility or would you rather die?

The treatment for alcohol abuse is a long term process. And it is a good thing to do. Without treatment the disease of alcoholism progresses. It will ultimately kill the person, one way or the other. People who come to the point of realizing they have an alcohol problem to be willing to change the way they live. Alcohol treatment always starts with detox. What is detox? It simply is managing the withdrawal symptoms medically, comfortably and safely. Treatment can mean simple outpatient but most people assume it means 30 days of inpatient rehabilitation. Treatment is a way to change your life, for the better and that’s a good thing.
