Federal Court Rules in Favor of Non 12 Step Rehab

May 7th, 2010

Recently, the drug rehab industry was set straight about whether or not the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous were religiously oriented and therefore faith based. A federal judge ruled an inmate, who was a devout atheist, could not be required to complete a rehab program that was based on the 12 steps. What this means, of course, is 99% of the drug rehabs in America are religiously oriented. And it does raise the question of separation of church and state when it comes to state and federal funding for 12 step based programs. Drug rehab, such as Malibu Horizon, should be about treatment and learning to live a clean and sober lifestyle, not about religion. Forcing drug addicts and alcoholics to take a big dose of religion, as the primary solution to their problem, might be why their rate of success is so low.

Drug Rehabs in California are Ahead of the Pack

May 4th, 2010

Each drug rehab treatment center is a unique entity. No two are anything like each other. Probably because the owners all have a different agenda. Most are in it for the money, that is the truth. I happen to like treatment centers in California because at least they understand alcoholism and drug addiction cannot be treated with a cookie cutter, 12 step approach. No two people are even remotely alike, so how can that assembly line approach make sense? And California drug rehabs seem to get it. They offer a wider range of services and therapies so they can individualize the client’s treatment plan. For my money, I’ll roll the dice with a rehab in California, knowing I’ll be getting more bang for my buck, and a better chance for a successful outcome.

California Drug Rehabs

April 30th, 2010

Where you go to rehab can and usually does make a big difference in whether you are successful or not. California drug rehabs seem to understand that alcoholism and drug addiction can be treated with more than the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. AA and NA are great support groups. They are not treatment. Treatment is about treating the underlying causes of using drugs, alcohol is a drug. California has the best drug rehabs in the country. They offer the kind of treatment which treats the disease, not the symptoms.

Non 12 Step Rehab Programs

April 15th, 2010

If you didn’t see our last blog, you missed the federal ruling which made it unconstitutional to require an atheist to complete a 12 step rehab program. I am all in favor of 12 step programs. Personally, I think they are a great way to stay clean and sober. The point is they are, in fact based on faith in a higher power. And for most, that is God. Non 12 step rehab programs understand that 12 step programs are not treatment. And the odds are a serious drug addict and or alcoholic does not want to hear that God is the answer, even it is true.

Judge Rules Against 12 Step Rehab Programs for Atheist

April 14th, 2010

In a very interesting case, a judge recently ruled that an atheist, who was ordered to complete rehab, as a part of his parole agreement, cannot be forced to do it in a 12 step facility. Here is a link to the article . Say whatever you want about the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, they are based on faith and building a relationship with a power greater than yourself, usually referred to as G-O-D. Non 12 step based rehab programs, have understood this point all along. Treatment for drug and or alcohol abuse should be about therapy and learning how to live without using, and not promote religion as the solution to a medical problem.

Non 12 Step Rehab Centers Ahead of their Time

April 5th, 2010

The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous has been around a long time. It has proven to be the best way to stay clean and sober. But guess what, it’s not treatment. It is aftercare. Non 12 step rehabs understand treatment is treatment and AA is aftercare. It is far too easy, and cheap, to simply take patients to AA meetings and say ok this is what you have to do to stay clean. AA is there to keep people sober but not get them sober and the difference is detox and rehab.

Dual Diagnosis Rehab

April 2nd, 2010

First a word about dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis refers to someone who abuses alcohol and or drugs and has a co-occurring psychiatric condition. This is important because drug and or alcohol abuse is usually the person’s attempt to self medicate and self-soothe their psychiatric condition, such as depression, bi-polar, panic or anxiety disorder. Most experts agree that this is the best approach to addressing alcoholism and drug addiction. It treats the underlying cause of the disease. So, if you know someone considering drug rehab, be sure and tell them they need to go to the best dual diagnosis rehab program they can afford.

How to Find the Right Best Treatment Centers

March 31st, 2010

When it is time to go to rehab, you need to be able to locate the right best rehab treatment center.  This is a very stressful time, which makes the process that much more difficult. The fist place to look is at the requirements of the person going to rehab. What type of program and facility would match their needs and unique issues. There are lots of rehabs out there and no two are anything alike. Some are more attuned to younger people, while others specialize in mood disorders like depression.  Take your time, alcoholism and addiction are fatal diseases, so there is a lot riding on the decision.

Prescription Abuse in a Class by Itself

March 18th, 2010

When people talk about drugs they talk in terms of classifications. There’s opiates, stimulants, anti-depressants, etc. So it is only fitting that we put the prescription drug abuse problem in a classification too. For one thing, it was the second leading cause of “accidental” deaths last year. For another, 10% of the whole country has admitted they used pills illegally, at least once. And that’s just for starters. At least 20% of our teenagers are abusing them and it killed more people last year than all other illegal drug use combined. I could go on, the bottom line is prescription medication abuse is in a class all by itself. For drug detox and rehab help prescription addiction abuse
