USC EDUCATOR AND ADDICTION MEDICINE PIONEER DR. AKIKUR MOHAMMAD DISCUSSES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ‘OFF LABEL’ MEDICATION FOR TREATING ALCOHOLISM

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Malibu Horizon, one of the best rehab centers for alcohol treatment and alcohol detox in the country and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California (USC.edu), has never been afraid to speak his mind about the barriers keeping addiction medicine from moving forward and recently has been quite vocal about the limiting factors impacting effective alcohol detox and treatment. Beyond misinformation, Dr. Mohammad is deeply concerned by the fact that many highly effective medications used for alcohol treatment are not FDA indicated (off label), which means that the physicians are taking a risk by prescribing them. Since there are so few FDA indicated medications for treating alcohol detox, top addiction professionals are forced to prescribe ‘off label’ options, which can ultimately be used against the prescribing physicians by malpractice attorneys attempting to discredit doctors.

Dr. Mohammad said, “Aside from the countless studies in the United States and Europe, which undoubtedly prove the effectiveness of certain medications for the exceptional treatment of alcohol detox and alcohol treatment through relapse prevention, it is considered ‘off label’ by the FDA, which leaves physicians susceptible to litigation. This is not just frustrating, but also makes it more difficult for us to provide alcohol abusers with the lifesaving medication they need.” Mohammad added, “For instance, Topiramate (Topamax) is an antiepileptic drug, or seizure medication; however, numerous studies have shown that Topiramate can and should be used for Alcohol Detox and Alcohol Treatment through relapse prevention, due to it effects on GABA and Glutamate receptors, which are unbalanced during Alcohol Detox and during abstinence. It’s not FDA indicated for Alcohol Treatment but Clinically we see significant effects as shown in studies.”

Dr. Mohammad and his team will include this sensitive topic in their forthcoming series of ‘town hall’ meetings in an effort to educate the public and encourage physicians to become more vocal about these unfortunate limitations. Mohammad added, “It is beyond unfortunate when the best possible medications for alcohol treatment aren’t indicated as such by the FDA, which makes the process of treating this disease more difficult. While I understand the FDA’s need to set boundaries, there are more than enough conclusive studies regarding the ‘off label’ benefits of various medications and the simple truth is, we can save more lives by using these medications but we need to work with the FDA to protect physicians from various legal pitfalls that emerge when working with non-FDA indicated medications.”

Non 12 Step Programs Work Just Fine

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

When someone needs to stop drinking and wants to join a program for help, they can turn to several treatment types. There are non 12 step programs that work in a different way than conventional treatment centers. They have a high success rate because of many years of research and training. The program has some key factors in it that help to make it effective and useful for patients.

People are encouraged to seek rehab at a non traditional center when dealing with alcohol issues. These places are full of supportive staff who work with patients to listen to their needs and concerns. Ideas and suggestions are formed around the actual person and not general people.

A center that is full of professional care and other people going through the same thing, will help a person feel better about their habit and seek help for it. They will get to speak with other people just like them and speak directly to staff members whenever they need to.

There is a secular approach which allows alcohol abusers that chance to meditate and find their inner peace. They will discover who they are and why they began drinking in the first place. It could be a pathway to self discovery that is much needed to someone who suffers from an addiction.

A treatment that involves non traditional methods may be more effective for certain people. There are some people who are not fond of rules or being told what to do. A plan that involves most of the patient’s opinion and planning, will have a willing participant rather than an unwilling one.

Finding non 12 step programs is easy, they are available in every community and neighborhood. The non traditional values and research, allows people to find their inner peace at their own rate and time and deal with the addiction with experienced and trained staff.

Dual Diagnosis Rehab – Treating the Underlying Cause of Addiction

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Dual diagnosis rehab is the term applied when a person suffers from both an alcohol and or  substance abuse as well as some psychiatric disorder. The psychiatric condition can be any number of problems, including depression, bi-polar, anxiety, panic, ADD/ADHD, borderline personality, schizophrenia and any number of other problems. If lasting recovery and abstinence is to be achieved, both the substance abuse and the mental condition must be properly treated simultaneously. If someone has an allergic reaction, the cause of the reaction must be determined and treated, not just the body’s surface reaction. When a drug alcohol rehab begins the process of treatment, the first thing to determined would be to see if any co-occurring mood disorders existed, nor not. Once that information is established, a comprehensive treatment plan can be assembled and real treatment, begin.

Dual Diagnosis Rehab Treatment Centers Are Better

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Why are dual diagnosis treatment centers better? First, dual diagnosis rehab treatment centers are rehabs that provide treatment got both psychiatric and substance abuse problems. Most alcoholics and drug addicts suffer from some kind of mood disorder, like depression, bi-polar, anxiety or ADD. So when they use and abuse drugs and or alcohol it is a form of “self-medication” to relieve their discomfort. That having been said, unless a treatment properly addresses any and all co-occurring psychiatric problems, the person is at a very high risk of relapse. The best drug rehabs offer a good dual diagnosis program.

Doing 30 Days in an Addiction Center

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

People say going to a 30 day drug addiction treatment center is a big waste of time and money. People who say ” I am not going to go to rehab because it does not work”, do not know what they are talking about. And they are using it as a lame excuse to not go. The truth is 30 days of inpatient rehab is the ideal way to start down the road of successful recovery.  It is true not everyone who goes to drug rehab is successful. Those who do not make it in recovery, fail because they were unwilling to give it 100%. Since, addiction is a fatal disease, I like the odds of doing 30 days of rehab, as opposed to the absolute certainty of death from the disease called drug addiction.

Consider a Drug Program Carefully

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Like with anything else, be careful when shopping for the right best drug program. In the case of a drug rehabilitation treatment program, like anything else, you have to ask lots of good questions. Not all drug treatment programs are created equal. Like any other enterprise, a treatment program for drug abuse is about as good as the people who manage and work there. And, there’s more. In the case of a drug rehab program, you need to know some places really don’t care as much as they should about their clients. Same as some businesses we could mention. The point is, there is much more at stake here, than say buying a new blue ray DVD. Do your homework, get as much good information as you can from former patients and even the local better business bureau.

Freedom Starts With Inpatient Treatment

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Who in their right mind wakes up and and says, I’m going to check into inpatient treatment today. Seriously, people with a drug and or alcohol dependence need help. Checking themselves into a drug alcohol rehab is probably the best way to start a whole new life of recovery. Yes, I understand, it is a rather radical thing to do.  Let’s look at the alternatives. The person can continue on the way they’re going. They can try and stop or control their behavior. Or, they can try some other form of therapy. Freedom, especially from drug alcohol addiction, rarely comes cheap. And going to rehab is no guarantee of success. It takes a lot of work and a firm commitment. In a word, it’s do or die time, and isn’t freedom and a better life worth a it?

No Two Rehab Centers Are Alike

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

There are inpatient, rehab centers for alcohol and drug abuse in most major cities. And the interesting thing is no two rehab centers are remotely the same. Each one has their own philosophy, history, staff and program. Most of them, but not all, are firmly entrenched in the the 12-Step, alcoholics anonymous model of recovery. And not all of them have detox facilities. Some do a much better job with dual diagnosis than others. Some use the “Florida model”, where the patients have to cook, clean and shop for themselves. Picking the right treatment rehab center is a very important decision. It can make the difference between being successful, or not. Visit their website, ask a lot of good questions and take your time.

Not All Rehabs are the Same

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Your classic 30 day drug alcohol rehabs come in all kinds of different varieties. Some claim to offer a “cure” for addiciton or alcoholism. Others promise very high rates of success.  No two treatment centers are the same. Each has its own philosophy, staff, program and facilities. And 30 days of rehab can cost from $15,000 to $75,000. Betty Ford has the best name recognition. We suggest you take a good hard look at a lot of different places before spending that much money. The best programs have good reputations for high standards and a committment to excellence.
