Non 12 step programs are secular, non faith based rehabs. They offer drug alcohol treatment programs which are not centered around the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

When someone needs to stop drinking and wants to join a program for help, they can turn to several treatment types. There are non 12 step programs that work in a different way than conventional treatment centers. They have a high success rate because of many years of research and training. The program has some key factors in it that help to make it effective and useful for patients.

People are encouraged to seek rehab at a non traditional center when dealing with alcohol issues. These places are full of supportive staff who work with patients to listen to their needs and concerns. Ideas and suggestions are formed around the actual person and not general people.

A center that is full of professional care and other people going through the same thing, will help a person feel better about their habit and seek help for it. They will get to speak with other people just like them and speak directly to staff members whenever they need to.

There is a secular approach which allows alcohol abusers that chance to meditate and find their inner peace. They will discover who they are and why they began drinking in the first place. It could be a pathway to self discovery that is much needed to someone who suffers from an addiction.

A treatment that involves non traditional methods may be more effective for certain people. There are some people who are not fond of rules or being told what to do. A plan that involves most of the patient’s opinion and planning, will have a willing participant rather than an unwilling one.

Finding non 12 step programs is easy, they are available in every community and neighborhood. The non traditional values and research, allows people to find their inner peace at their own rate and time and deal with the addiction with experienced and trained staff.

Recently, the drug rehab industry was set straight about whether or not the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous were religiously oriented and therefore faith based. A federal judge ruled an inmate, who was a devout atheist, could not be required to complete a rehab program that was based on the 12 steps. What this means, of course, is 99% of the drug rehabs in America are religiously oriented. And it does raise the question of separation of church and state when it comes to state and federal funding for 12 step based programs. Drug rehab, such as Malibu Horizon, should be about treatment and learning to live a clean and sober lifestyle, not about religion. Forcing drug addicts and alcoholics to take a big dose of religion, as the primary solution to their problem, might be why their rate of success is so low.

I am all in favor of 12 step programs. Personally, I think they are a great way to stay clean and sober. The point is they are, in fact based on faith in a higher power. And for most, that is God. Non 12 step rehab programs understand that 12 step programs are not treatment.

In a very interesting case, a judge recently ruled that an atheist, who was ordered to complete rehab, as a part of his parole agreement, cannot be forced to do it in a 12 step facility. Here is a link to the article . Say whatever you want about the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, they are based on faith and building a relationship with a power greater than yourself, usually referred to as G-O-D. Non 12 step based rehab programs, have understood this point all along. Treatment for drug and or alcohol abuse should be about therapy and learning how to live without using, and not promote religion as the solution to a medical problem.

As a matter of fact, it is one of the greatest things to happen to troubled people. The issue here is that the 12 step approach does not work for everyone. The other problem about them are the spiritual religious aspect to the 12 steps. For some, it is a deal breaker. And the 12 steps are not treatment. So modern treatment centers are not basing their whole program around them anymore. And, unfortunately, all to often, that is what it is, primarily. And just so you know I am not anti AA, let me say, personally, I go to a 12 step meeting every day. I think 12 step meetings are one of the best things in the world. What they are not is treatment. The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, among others, are support groups which helps a recovering alcoholic or drug addict stay clean and or sober. Or, as someone once said, AA is there to keep someone sober, not to get them sober. So before picking the best drug alcohol rehab, consider a program which considers itself, a non 12 step program.
