Options For Alcohol Treatment

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Trying to over come alcohol abuse can be quite difficult. It can be very hard for those who are abusing themselves and it can also be a quite stressful situation for anyone who lives around that kind of person as well. It can become quite a challenge and painful experience for those who must watch a loved one suffer through alcoholism. Should you have a friend or family member who is an alcoholic you will want to try and help them stop their abuse and put an end to any more damage being done to that person. However, this is not always an easy task to achieve, which is why there are several options for alcohol treatment. Here are some treatments that you can choose from that may help anyone who is suffering from alcohol abuse.

The person who is drinking heavily is fully aware that he or she is trapped in a situation that is ruining their lives and those around them. It is then that people start to lose their respect for those people and in many cases just give up on that person. It will be very important to understand that it is really too difficult for anyone who is abusing themselves with alcohol to just quit anytime they want too.

For some people it will happen with a gradual process and for other it can take even longer. After one achieve success in quitting there will be times that person may experience stages of withdraw. It is then that the person will need some support from a close friend or family member who can offer some a leading hand by monitoring the activities and not allowing the person to give in and begin to drink again.

That person will now need some kind of replacement such as an activity to help stay sober, especially when that person is at the point where he or she really feels the urge to drink. It is then that the person will certainly need to keep themselves busy during that moment when they begin to feel weakened by an urge to drink.

It will be a good idea to stay away from places that sell alcohol or anything that has related to that persons drinking habit that can create any temptation to drink. The abuser should reward his of herself for avoiding the alcohol and this should also help to continue to keep the success continuing. This can provide some good motivation to not begin drinking again.

There are times when it gets to the point that a person will need some extra help by entering into a rehabilitation center. Because of this there are several alcohol treatment centers available for those who find it to difficult to quit on their own. The center will provide all of the necessary help that is required to try and get that person to give up drinking. The centers may range from short term to long term, depending on the situation of the person who is abusing his or herself.

In some cases there are medications that can be taken too. These medications are prescribed by the food and drug administration. There are three drugs that seem to be commonly used. Naltrexone, Antabuse and Acamprosate.

Should there be people who can not admit that they are in need of help, then there are also plenty of support groups that can also be of some help. One of the most famous is Alcoholics Anonymous. There a person can join in on the groups and discuss their problems among others who also suffer from the same abuse.

Treating Alcoholism In An Alcohol Rehab Treatment Centers

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Excessive alcohol intake can be fatal if not properly treated. Some think of alcohol treatment as impossible. Truth of the matter is, as any addiction it is never easy but with the best attitude and discipline it is very easy. Alcohol treatment is a journey so patience is of essence. It starts by one admitting that they have a problem with alcohol, you should not wait until it becomes uncontrollable.

There are many and effective alcohol treatment options like seeking a professional help or even going to a rehab. Believe it or not but you can also help yourself stop drinking and have control over alcohol The first and the most important thing to do is to commit to stop drinking. One should not allow denial to derail him. You might find yourself making excuses and sometimes not admitting you have the problem. This results into slower recovery. In this case keeping in mind the disadvantages of alcohol will help you to remain focused. You can consider how not drinking makes your relationship improve because you can handle problems with a sober mind. It also makes you feel good mentally. Finally it increases your productivity at work.

You need to surround yourself with people who have similar opinions and those who encourage you to stop drinking. This means you might need to avoid your drinking friends which is a worth course for the sake of your health. It also makes you a more responsible person rather than an ignorant person since alcohol gets in the way of your job performance and family duties.

The second stage of alcohol treatment and of necessity is to set goals and prepare for change. There are people who just want to cut drinking and those who want to stop completely. This depends on the severity of your alcohol intake. Abstinence is considered the safest and easiest. However if you just want to cut drinking you can decide which days you will take your drink, how many drinks you will take. If your case is to stop completely, you should know it is a gradual process which might also help to have a quit date, like 1 month, 2 months, 6 months and so on depending on your choice.

Temptations should be avoided at all cost like doing away with alcohol reminders, bar ware from home and office. Also let your friends, family members and colleagues know your intentions regarding alcohol recovery so that they accord you the support that you need. Discipline yourself from bad influences, where you limit yourself from alcohol and respecting those limits. You can talk to your doctor, join guidance counseling and peer group or even seek help from your health insurance company for encouragement and to keep you focused.

You must remember getting sober safely is also of importance. Due to the long time of alcohol intake when one stops drinking he might get mild headaches, his body parts shaking like the hands or even high blood pressure. When this happens its advisable to seek medical help.

To finally stay alcohol free you need to build a new you. This is in reference to taking good care of yourself, concentrate on eating the right food take daily exercise to help you relieve stress and promote your mental and physical well being. Develop new interests that leave you fulfilled therefore making you feel better about yourself and boost your self esteem.

A good alcohol treatment should plan for future triggers and cravings. These are major challenges and you should counter them with developing new skills to deal with stressful situations. Am mentioned earlier, discipline plays a major role in this treatment therefore saying a firm no is very important.

Non 12 Step Rehab Programs Offer Alternatives

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I think the drug alcohol rehab business has become obsolete and out of touch with the times. Treatment and rehab should not be very much about going to 12 step meetings. And, unfortunately, all to often, that is what it is, primarily.  And just so you know I am not anti AA, let me say, personally, I go to a 12 step meeting every day. I think 12 step meetings are one of the best things in the world. What they are not is treatment. The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, among others, are support groups which helps a recovering alcoholic or drug addict stay clean and or sober. Or, as someone once said, AA is there to keep someone sober, not to get them sober. So before picking the best drug alcohol rehab, consider a program which considers itself, a non 12 step program.
