It is so easy to say a drug addict is weak, bad or some other label. The truth is they may be one or more of those things but that has nothing to do with their drug abuse and addiction. Drug addiction is a brain disorder which renders the person virtually powerless over their ability to not use or control their drug use. More and more research confirms this fact. So, you may say, what? Well, when talking to families about it, and they tell me their child was a good person and all of sudden they are a very different, we have some encouraging news. And the other thing is drug addiction can be put into permanent remission, if the person is willing to follow the process known as drug rehab and recovery.
Here’s a drug treatment center which treats addiction as a brain disease

The fact recovery from drug addiction is not easy, is not news. For most people who have found the way out of the hell called drug addiction, it has been a process. That means recovery starts with hitting “bottom”. At that point the person then is ready to do what it takes to get and stay clean. For many, that meant going to drug rehab, then Narcotics Anonymous and making abstinence the number one priority in their life. Recovery is not easy. It might multiple starts and failures, known as relapses, before they break the cycle habitual cycle. Most would agree, the process of long term successful recovery is about change, major league change. Changing the way the addict thinks, reacts and deals with life. And that baby, ain’t easy.

Maybe I missed it, but I have not seen the real truth about Michael Jackson’s death come out yet. The truth is Michael Jackson died from a fatal brain disease, that is right. And the thing that is a shame is that everyone close to him knew he had it and as far as I know, NOT ONE OF THEM did enough about it. Wait, there is more to the story. Part of the brain disease Michael Jackson had made it difficult if not virtually impossible for Michael to get the medical help he so obviously needed, on his own. Oh I saw a story today where supposedly Elizabeth Taylor tried to help Michael. So maybe it wasn’t everybody who knew him. Michael Jackson could be alive today if only someone close to him would have stepped up and helped him get treated for his fatal brain disease. And what was the brain disease? The fatal brain disease Michael Jackson had was what is known as drug addiction, a very treatable, beatable disease that can be put and kept in remission.

People say going to a 30 day drug addiction treatment center is a big waste of time and money. People who say ” I am not going to go to rehab because it does not work”, do not know what they are talking about. And they are using it as a lame excuse to not go. The truth is 30 days of inpatient rehab is the ideal way to start down the road of successful recovery. It is true not everyone who goes to drug rehab is successful. Those who do not make it in recovery, fail because they were unwilling to give it 100%. Since, addiction is a fatal disease, I like the odds of doing 30 days of rehab, as opposed to the absolute certainty of death from the disease called drug addiction.

What could possibly be added to everything that’s already been written about substance abuse? I am a drug addict in recovery. So I know what it feels like to live a life of drug abuse and addiction. For people who have never known what it is like to use drugs every day, I will tell you after a while it isn’t much fun. I started out smoking marijuana when I was 21 years old. And for the next 15 years I smoked pot. I honestly believed there was nothing wrong with what I was doing. Drug addiction has a way of making you believe it is ok, or not that bad. And when you have not used in a while that first hit makes an addict feel like they have died and gone to heaven.

At the risk of splitting hairs, there is a difference between drug abuse and drug addiction. They are not the same. They belong to the same organization, but are in separate departments. All drug addicts abuse their drug or drugs of choice. The fine and important distinction between a drug abuser and a drug addict is craving and dependence. If someone can smoke marijuana one day, all day and then not even think about it again for at least a month, they would not meet my criteria for being an addict. However, if a person smokes pot and the next day feels a strong urge, desire and need to smoke again, there is a very good chance they are addicted. Addiction is not about using or abusing drugs. It is the mental obsession which eventually takes over an addict’s life.

Like with anything else, be careful when shopping for the right best drug program. In the case of a drug rehabilitation treatment program, like anything else, you have to ask lots of good questions. Not all drug treatment programs are created equal. Like any other enterprise, a treatment program for drug abuse is about as good as the people who manage and work there. And, there’s more. In the case of a drug rehab program, you need to know some places really don’t care as much as they should about their clients. Same as some businesses we could mention. The point is, there is much more at stake here, than say buying a new blue ray DVD. Do your homework, get as much good information as you can from former patients and even the local better business bureau.

Ever wonder what the acronym ETOH stands for? Over the ages people have refereed to alcohol in all kinds of ways. like booze, ethanol, hooch and firewater just to name a few. In the health industry , ETOH stands for alcohol. I got to wondering why this was true. One of the reasons is it is easier to write etoh than alcohol. ETOH actually is an abbreviation for ethanol, the base ingredient of alcoholic beverages. After some research I am still not clear as to the history or idea behind it. It occurred to me that maybe there were times when it was better to disguise the word alcohol from family or people who did not need to know. And maybe it was to give alcohol, which comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes and strengths, a generic term to refer to alcohol in its pure chemical essence. In any case when you see the term ETOH you can be sure they are talking about the kind of alcohol you drink.

Who in their right mind wakes up and and says, I’m going to check into inpatient treatment today. Seriously, people with a drug and or alcohol dependence need help. Checking themselves into a drug alcohol rehab is probably the best way to start a whole new life of recovery. Yes, I understand, it is a rather radical thing to do. Let’s look at the alternatives. The person can continue on the way they’re going. They can try and stop or control their behavior. Or, they can try some other form of therapy. Freedom, especially from drug alcohol addiction, rarely comes cheap. And going to rehab is no guarantee of success. It takes a lot of work and a firm commitment. In a word, it’s do or die time, and isn’t freedom and a better life worth a it?

After watching the video of Steve McNair’s girlfriend, Kazemi, getting pulled over for a DUI, I got to thinking. What if she doesn’t get to just walk away that night after refusing to take the breathalyzer? Apparently she denied being drunk, but openly admitted she was “high”. Now I understand that Mr. McNair was in the car with her and he was probably high or drunk too, so you don’t have to go there. But somehow I find it rather interesting that she was allowed to just walk away. I mean is it ok to refuse to take a breathalyzer and alright to admit your “high” and then just drive away with a ticket? There seems to be something very wrong with a legal system that allows a drunk or stoned driver to just drive away. And if the laws against driving under the influence, DUI, were tougher and she was in fact arrested, maybe Steve McNair would be alive today. That is something to think about.
